How ADAS Technology Enhances Driver Safety

What You Need to Know About ADAS Technology
Safety is paramount when we’re on the road driving. Did you know that nearly 94% of vehicle accidents are caused by human mistakes? When you think about that, it’s kind of humbling. But we all know that making mistakes is part of being human, so the developers of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) decided to do something about it.
These amazing minds created systems that keep drivers like you safe. In this blog, we’re going to highlight the most common ADAS features and explain how they keep you and everyone in your vehicle safe.
What Is ADAS?
ADAS is a blanket term for several safety features found in vehicles on the road. While the concept might sound high tech, the fact is the first ADAS technology goes all the way back to the last century. In 1970, the world was introduced to anti-lock brakes, and ADAS began its journey into what we know it to be today.
The systems we list below work with a combination of cameras, radar, sensors, lidar, and other technologies to assist drivers and help them avoid common mistakes.
Passive ADAS Systems
This first set of features falls under the title of “passive” because the system alerts the driver to an issue. It’s up to the driver to take action to avoid danger.
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
The anti-lock braking system activates if the driver applies the emergency brake. This system is useful if the vehicle begins to skid.
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Electronic stability control stabilizes the vehicle when the driver oversteers or understeers while navigating hazardous weather.
- Traction Control System (TCS)
The traction control system uses ABS and ESC to maintain traction, particularly when the driver is moving around challenging curves and turns.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Drowsy drivers can fall asleep, which causes them to swerve out of their lane. Lane departure warning alerts the driver so they can move back. Swerving also happens when a driver tries to get something off the floor while driving.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
If something like a deer or biker jumps in front of your vehicle, forward collision warning will alert you so you can swerve to avoid it.
- Blind Spot Detection
All humans have a blind spot. This system uses cameras and sensors to alert the driver when there is something in their blind spot.
- Backup Camera
Most drivers have this today. The camera is on the rear of the vehicle, and the driver can see directly behind them before backing up.
- Parking Assistance
This system will guide the driver so they can park in tough situations.
Active ADAS Systems
Below is a list of systems that fall under the title “active” because the system will take control of the vehicle to avoid danger.
- Emergency Steering
If something unexpected appears on the road and the driver doesn’t take action to avoid it, this system will act and steer the vehicle to avoid a collision.
- Automatic Emergency Braking
If something appears on the road ahead, this system will apply the brakes without any driver input.
- Adaptive Cruise Control
This system is like cruise control but moves with the flow of traffic, which is great for people who take long road trips and need a break.
- Lane Keeping Assist and Lane-Centering
If your car swerves into another lane, these two systems work as a team to put your vehicle back into its correct lane.
- Traffic Jam Assist
Stop-and-go traffic will no longer be a source of stress and anxiety with traffic jam assist.
- Self Parking
Parallel parking isn’t always easy. This system does it for you, so all the driver has to do is sit back and relax until their vehicle is safely parked.
ADAS & Windshield Repair and Replacement
When you have your windshield repaired or replaced, you must take any ADAS technology you have into consideration. Many of the cameras, sensors, and other technologies that enable those systems to work are built into your windshield.
The best way to handle this is by having the auto glass technician calibrate your ADAS, especially after a windshield replacement.
